Eataly: A Culinary Passeggiata in the Heart of Toronto

Giannone Petricone's Award-Winning Design Fosters Social Connection through Italian Cuisine

The inspiration behind Eataly is the traditional Italian passeggiata, a timeless ritual where Italians gather in the main streets and piazzas in the evening to socialize, stroll, and occasionally stop at bars and shops. This atmosphere is recreated in the bustling centre of downtown Toronto, providing a unique experience for the city's residents and visitors.

Eataly Toronto stands out for its unique approach to design. Tailored to the nuances of the growing city, the design enhances and augments social connection through the universal catalyst of great Italian food. Unlike most Eataly locations that are centred around one main piazza, the Toronto location is designed around two - one the loggia and the other by the ovens. These spaces become orienting landmarks along the eventful passeggiata, punctuated by strings of market fair shelving, glass vitrines, and reach-in coolers filled with dry and fresh goods.

The realization of Eataly Toronto involved a diverse range of materials and technologies. From Fabricut fabric and antique mirrors to various types of metal, stone, leather, and wood, each element contributes to the overall aesthetic and experience. The design team, including Giannone and Petricone, Unique Store Fixtures, Smith and Anderson, Opus Mechanical, Guild Electric, and Action Lighting, worked collaboratively to bring this vision to life.

The project, which began in December 2018 and was completed in November 2019, has been recognized for its innovative design. Eataly Toronto was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020, a prestigious recognition for top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
